Taking a Little Step Every Day

Taking a Little Step every Day.jpg

My friend Raf, The Handiest Man, popped round yesterday afternoon to see if we could fix the broken cistern on the toilet. We couldn't do it.

So we shared a piece of cake.

Now baking has been many people’s thing during lockdown. I enjoy cooking, though I’ve never really got on with baking. Recently though, there’s been a breakthrough. I went back to basics. Recipes. I learn to dwell a little in the steps of those who have walked these paths before.

To be alive is to make a small creative act every day.

The next step is to learn to transcend my story.

“I’m no good at baking cakes”

is a story.

I hear people say they are 'not creative'. Yet merely by being alive we are all participants in Creation. Our little selves get easily overwhelmed by our small stories around not being good enough, yet our souls look on, waiting to leap at any chance for us to contribute to life more meaningfully.

And without the meta narratives, the myths and religious parables, the ancient and folk stories, we have no reference with which to create deeper meaning. We remain trapped in our cultural and ‘small’ version of life. Yet our souls long to sing the stories of renewal that lie in wait for us and for our service in the world.

So.

A new frontier.

Carrot cake.

As we share a slice, Raf entertains me with his stories. We laugh.

Take little steps. It doesn’t have to be an earth-shattering thing.

What story in you is longing to shift?

(I used this recipe for the cake…)
